I have it all hooked up but I am having incredible latency and/or dropout issues from the incoming data. In an attempt to take the processing load off of the MP ('cause I don't want to fork over $3000 for a new one) I just bought a MacMini, 2.6G i7, 16G RAM to act as a slave.

I got VEP5 almost a year ago and have had only mixed results running it inside of my Mac Pro, the primary issue being overdriving the MP's processing no matter what I did. You used the words "rock solid" in your first post on this thread, and my experience is anything but that.

Hey Dave, sorry to butt into this thread but I'm desperate for some help with VE Pro 5. To sum up, I can't remember the last time I bought an orchestral library that DIDN'T have at least some tuning issues or programming mistakes. There have been a number of updates and fixes since then. The LASS video you link to is getting on for two years old. Epic Horns sound thin despite there being eight of them!!!! This is entirely subjective of course. VSL is probably the most professionally programmed but I'm not a fan of their strings and brass. There's a BIG delay as the transition samples trigger and switch to the sustain. Also the legato scripting in Play is VERY slow. There is some very sloppy programming in HW Strings and Brass and because Play is a dumbed down sample player you can't edit the mistakes out yourself. It sounded like a school orchestra of 6 year olds!!!! You should hear the brass tuning in version one of Spitfire Albion. In context, the violin tuning has never bothered me but the upper ranges of the cellos has.

Yes there are a few tuning issues with LASS but that is one of the better programmed libraries. There were clicks at the loop points in the tubas in HW Brass etc. At one point the violas in EW Hollywood Strings were COMPLETELY out of tune. It's difficult to find any library that DOESN'T have some sort of problem. I found again those videos, tuning issues are more obvious on LASS: I'm trying to investigate this, but this is scary. One downside is that 8dio has only violins and cello for the moment.ĭo you know if there are tuning problems with both products ?, because on some demos, I was shocked by a tuning issue. I don't have a definitive opinion on LASS and Adagio violins, I'm still listening to demos here and there, with a little preference to Adagio. Something like Symphobia could be a good replacement for Hollywood strings, but there are no divided sections, only ensemble.what a pity. In fact, I want both realistic and Hollywood sound, depending on the song with 1st and 2nd violins, violas, cellos and double bass sections, divisi and solo instruments. It's Kontakt too so works great in VE Pro on the same Mac as Pro Tools. There are far better, more modern alternatives although I still use a few samples from it.ĭon't dismiss I've worked with both the guys involved with this library on a custom string and brass library project and they really know their stuff. That room they record VSL in is really dead and lifeless.ĮW Symphonic Orchestra is REALLY showing it's age now. VSL brass is really quite thin and weak sounding compared to Hollywood Brass IMO. VSL is better for realistic classical mockups, EW is better for the big Hollywood Sound. If an "almost synthetic instantaneous big ensemble sound layer" is what you want then I don't think VSL is the way to go. I'm considering also VSL or EW Symphonic Orchestra for realistic orchestra parts and additionnal layers.įor Brass and Woodwinds, I have a preference for VSL. What I'm looking for in EW Hollywood strings, is this ""almost synthetic instantaneous big ensemble sound layer"" that would run well in "pop songs", if that means something I like what I hear from EW, only downside is PLAY.this VI scares me and what I read on it confirms what Marsdy says.

Performance is OK but not a patch on Kontakt, (excuse the pun.)įor VEPRO, I'm using it, but on the same Mac as Protools, I didn't make a stress test yet as I don't own 3rd party plugs for the moment. HW Strings and Brass are on separate SSD drives.

I'm running Play libraries on a separate PC in VE Pro. You can get away the HW Brass on the Mac but HW Strings just chokes VERY quickly with the big legato patches. EW REALLY need to do something about Play performance on the Mac, it's MUCH better on PC. Performance of Play on the Mac is NOT good and the best patches in Hollywood Strings are VERY demanding even if you run it from an SSD drive. Personally I prefer LASS over both the EW and VSL sting libs.

VE Pro is the way to go and it's rock solid with PT10. You're not going to get very far at all running any of these libraries in Pro Tools. Interested by these libraries, I just want to know if PLAY is stable in PT10 or VSL VePro ?Ĭoncerning VSL, would you invest in their libraries these days ?
